Song for Baby-O, Unborn

by Diana Di Prima
Sweetheart
when you break thru
you'll find
a poet here
not quite what one would choose.
I won't promise
you'll never go hungry
or that you won't be sad
on this gutted
breaking
globe
but I can show you
baby
enough to love
to break your heart
forever

Pause and breathe.
What do you feel when you read this? What do you think of her interplay of joy and sorrow? her wistfulness?

When I read the last stanza, posted on her page, I felt a chord moan under the thrum of nerve endings reverberating in my chest. It held longing, desire and knowledge. It's edginess wistful, sweet and sad rolled into and around itself. I am grateful.

  1. Mary-Lynn,

Thanks for this beautiful poem. It is both heartbreaking and beautiful. I'm reminded of my porch sweeping ritual every morning...I thank the previous day for all the bitter and all the sweet.

And your comment... "...felt a chord moan under the thrum of nerve endings reverberating in my chest. It held longing, desire, and knowledge."

Those words are a poem unto themselves. Thank you for sharing your beauty, and insight, and this blog! I can't wait to explore it more.

    hugs,
    Traci
